VA-Informaiton Packet for Grantham Students
Enrollment Period and Status for Students using VA Benefits
Students using VA benefits may enroll in multiple courses in an enrollment period. Students must show satisfactory progress in all courses for which they are enrolled and complete all courses in the eight-week (56-day) enrollment period. Course work is taken and VA funding awarded as outlined in Table 3.8. Although the asynchronous delivery method affords students great latitude in progressing through their studies, students are strongly encouraged to interact with their course instructors on regular basis to maximize their learning experience.Students are required to show progress in all courses. Grantham monitors a student’s progress on a regular basis.

Transcript Evaluation
Students using VA benefits must enroll into a degree program approved for Veterans Administration education benefits; therefore, VA students must have a complete evaluation of transfer credits.
Enrollment Certification
A Veterans Affairs Certifying Official (VACO) will certify a student’s enrollment to the VA once the student is enrolled. The student must complete the Veterans Certification Data form found in the Veterans Services Information Packet. Other acceptable forms are copies of the VA Form 22-1990, VA Form 22-1995, Certificate of Eligibility (COE), or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).
Concurrent Enrollment
While receiving VA educational benefits, students may be concurrently enrolled in two different institutions during the same enrollment period. Whichever school the student is pursuing a degree from will be the Parent School. Students using VA benefits must acquire an authorization letter from the VA Certifying Official at the Parent School addressed to the VA Certifying Official at the secondary school. This form states that the courses taken at the secondary school will be credited toward the current major the student is pursuing. Students using VA benefits are responsible for informing the secondary school's Veterans Office where their Parent School is located. The secondary school will complete the certification for the benefits form (VA form 22-1999) and send it to the VA.
Satisfactory Progress
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the state of Missouri require schools to monitor a student’s progress. To demonstrate compliance, the VA Certifying Official (VACO) must perform satisfactory progress checks. In addition to maintaining satisfactory progress, students using VA benefits must also comply with all University policies, including the Satisfactory Academic Progress and Academic Probation and Termination policies.
Procedure for Check of Satisfactory Progress:
Satisfactory Progress Check 1
- The first check is conducted at the end of the fourth (4th) week from the date of enrollment.
- The check is conducted at four weeks regardless of the number of courses taken.
- The student’s IEP is reviewed to determine if at least 50% of each course in which the student is enrolled has been completed.
- If it is determined that the student has completed at least 50% of each course, the student achieves satisfactory progress and a follow-up check is scheduled for four weeks.
- If it is determined that the student has not completed at least 50% of any of the courses in which he/she is enrolled, the student has not made satisfactory progress. A warning letter explaining failure to make satisfactory progress is then sent to the student and a follow-up is scheduled for seven (7) days.
- The student must demonstrate 50% completion (satisfactory progress) in all courses in which he/she is enrolled by the time of follow-up check.
- If the student fails to show satisfactory progress by the time of the follow-up check, a second warning letter is sent advising the student that he/she has an additional seven (7) days to demonstrate 75% completion of all courses in which he/she is enrolled.
- If the student fails to show satisfactory progress by the end of the second seven (7)-day period, a termination letter (Form 22-1999b) is sent to the VA. Submission of a Form 22-1999b discontinues VA benefits and may cause the student to become indebted to the VA.
Satisfactory Progress Check 2
- The second check is conducted at the end of eighth (8th) week from the date of enrollment.
- The student’s transcript is reviewed to determine if the student has completed all courses in which they were enrolled in the last enrollment period (including final exams) and achieved at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) for undergraduate students and 3.0 cumulative GPA for graduate students.
- If it is determined that the student has completed all courses and achieved the requisite GPA, the student achieves satisfactory progress. The student may enroll for a subsequent enrollment period and the enrollment will be certified to the VA.
- If it is determined that the student:
- has not completed all courses (including final exams), a termination letter (Form 22-1999b) is sent to the VA. Submission of a Form 22-1999b discontinues VA benefits and may cause the student to become indebted to the VA.
- has completed all courses (including final exams), but fails to achieve the requisite GPA, the student may enroll for a subsequent enrollment period, but the enrollment will not be certified to the VA.
Academic Probation
A student will be placed on academic probation if the cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.* A student using VA benefits who is on academic probation may enroll in a subsequent enrollment period, but the enrollment will not be certified to the VA until the requisite GPA is met.
*See Section 2.12 (Satisfactory Academic Progress) and 2.13 (Academic Probation and Termination) of the Grantham University Catalog for more details.Grantham may grant an additional 56-day grace period to complete all courses in which the student is enrolled; however, students will not receive VA payments during the grace period. The VA will automatically discontinue benefits on the day after the enrollment end date. Benefits will not resume until the requirements for all courses in which the student is enrolled have been satisfied, the student enrolls in a subsequent enrollment period and the enrollment has been certified to the VA.
Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)
Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation is a program to assist service-disabled veterans to obtain suitable employment and promote maximum independence in daily living. Professional counselors from the Department of Veterans Affairs assist in preparing an individual plan which includes services and financial assistance necessary to complete a designated program. Students seeking additional information pertaining to this type of benefit should contact the Vocational Rehabilitation Department of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
