Web Application Developer

Position Description


Analyzes requirements and develops web applications by performing the following duties.

  • Consults with end users to gather information about program needs, objectives, functions, features, and input/output requirements.
  • Analyzes, defines, and documents requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, hardware and operating system environment, interfaces with other systems, internal and external checks and controls, and outputs.
  • Investigates user problems and needs, identifies their source, and determines possible solutions.
  • Analyzes user project proposals to include identifying potential problem areas and recommends optimum approaches for project path.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, installation, and testing of applications software.
  • Contributes through code/algorithm development and other means, for the development of tools and interfaces between application programs and for the development of debugging programs.
  • Maintains confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed by the network.
  • Documents programming problems and resolutions for future reference.
  • Writes and maintains technical specifications.
  • Analyzes and estimates feasibility, costs, time, and compatibility with hardware and other programs.
  • Develops and maintains plans outlining step and time tables for developing programs.
  • Designs and codes screen layouts, graphical user interfaces, printed outputs, and interfaces with other systems.
  • Converts designs and specifications into computer code.
  • Compiles code into programs and corrects errors detected in compile process.
  • Creates test transactions and runs tests to find errors and confirm programs meet specifications.
  • Analyze code to find causes of errors and revises programs.
  • Consults with end uses to prototype, refine, rest, and debug programs to meet needs.
  • Writes and maintains documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and cor4rections.
  • Writes documentation or reviews documentation written by others that describes installation and operating procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance by responding to inquiries from others regarding errors, problems, or questions about programs.
  • Trains end users or technical support staff to use programs.
  • Monitors performance of programs after implementation.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in professional development activities and serve on college committees that support the goals and objectives of the division of the college
  • Provide back-up for student records and registration services, including registering students, issuing transcripts, answering phones, scanning, reporting grades and working special events.

Required/Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Education and/or Experience.  Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B. S.) from accredited four-year college or university in Computer Science or related discipline is preferred.  An Associate's Degree (A. A.) in Computer Science or related field plus two years progressive related experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Language Skills.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 
  • Mathematical Skills.  Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity.
  • Reasoning Ability.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.  Professional certification is a plus.
  • Other Skills and Abilities.  Proficient in html prototyping (including wire-frame layout for user preview), visual interfaces, graphic design applications, and HTML/XHTML. Proficient in computer scripting languages and report languages. Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  Ability to work in a positive team-oriented manner with a variety of people (students, faculty, administrators, staff, vendors and members of the public)..
